On The Shores of Lake Buena Vista

On The Shores of Lake Buena Vista

Buena Vista is one of those place names that most people seem to have tucked away somewhere in their subconsciousness. If you’ve watched any movie produced by the Disney empire, the words “Buena Vista” have probably flashed across your eyeballs, which is why the words ring several bells.

Buena Vista in Florida is technically known as Lake Buena Vista and it is the home of the Walt Disney World Resort, which is the reason why most people come to this part of Florida and why they start looking for stroller rentals in Orlando. Lake Buena Vista is also considered to be a city in its own right, although Orlando is the local seat of government for Orange County and is the site of the nearest international airport that brings in all those visitors. As you can imagine, all those tourists – possibly including you and your family – come and touch down in the international airport in Orlando then take a hire car or catch a connecting shuttle, bus or taxi out to Lake Buena Vista to their accommodation (which can be quite an exercise in heavy logistics, which is just one reason why families with small children keep an eye out for stroller rentals in Orlando to give them one less thing to stress over when getting from A to B).

Lake Buena Vista is, as you can guess, on the shores of a lake called… well, you probably don’t need me to spell it out for you. The name “Buena Vista” was taken from the site of the Disney headquarters over on the other side of the USA, and it means “lovely view” or “good view”. However, this name is only recent, and before the Walt Disney company bought the land and took control of it to build the world-famous Walt Disney World Resort with its four very popular theme parks, this lake was known as Black Lake. The district that the lake was in was known as Reedy Creek, and for a very short time, the city was called “City of Reedy Creek”, which doesn’t quite have the same ring as “Buena Vista”. The name is still officially, there and the Reedy Creek Improvement District controls all the undeveloped land – and there is some, much to the surprise of the tourists who book stroller rentals in Orlando – around Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake. And when you push that stroller down Main Street USA in the Walt Disney World Resort, keep an eye out for the name of Reedy Creek Ranch, one of the original businesses in the area the land for the resort was purchased from. Reedy Creek is still the name of a natural waterway in the area.

Before Walt Disney World Resort was built, there wasn’t really much to Lake Buena Vista – or Black Lake and Reedy Creek. Like other rural or semi-rural parts of Florida in and around Orlando, it was largely orange growing country, with a bit of cattle ranching on the side. So as well as booking stroller rentals in Orlando, make sure you eat a bit of beefsteak and have a drink of orange juice to remember the Orlando of old.

There are a handful of actual residents of Lake Buena Vista, and they are all Disney employees (which probably comes as no surprise) and live in their own little community. Most of the other workers who you’ll see in and around the resort – the people who clean the hotel rooms, service the rides, take your tickets, organise your stroller rentals in Orlando and drive the buses live in Orlando itself rather than Lake Buena Vista.

Lake Buena Vista has a neighbouring municipality that is also controlled by the Disney empire and contains the land where the Walt Disney World Resort actually sits. This is Bay Lake.

It is highly likely that if you are a parent bringing your family on vacation to Disney World, you will be staying in Lake Buena Vista. There are so many hotels and other forms of accommodation, ranging from the very cheap to the very expensive. It can be quite confusing if you’ve never been to Lake Buena Vista or Orlando before, so a good map is a must so you don’t get totally lost. One good thing about stroller rentals in Orlando is that your stroller gets delivered to your hotel door (and taken away again at the end of your stay in this city) by someone who knows the city well and knows where every single hotel, motel and lodge in Lake Buena Vista – and Orlando – is. One hassle fewer to deal with!

Although Walt Disney World Resort dominates Lake Buena Vista for obvious reasons, it has a number of attractions outside the Disney Resort itself (although they are owned by the resort, like everything in the Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake area). The Lake Buena Vista golf course is one such attraction, although going golfing is not really on the plans of families who visit Orlando and book stroller rentals in Orlando, as this leisurely game (on, admittedly, a beautiful course) is usually a bit too leisurely for the small children in the strollers. However, the other main point of interest, the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, could be worth a visit and is likely to be of interest to any sports fans in your family, big or small.

The ESPN Wide World of Sports complex contains nine venues, each of which would be considered a complex or an arena in its own right. These are the Champion Stadium (primarily for baseball), the HP Field House, the Jostens Center, the Hess Sports Fields, the Baseball Quadraplex, the Softball Diamondplex, Center Court Stadium (tennis), a cross country course and a track and field complex. Quite a few major league baseball and soccer games get played here, so if you time your trip to Orlando right, you might be able to catch a game – and you will be grateful that our fleet of stroller rentals in Orlando are lightweight and easy to manoeuvre up steps, as these arenas are quite big.
